Constipation
Constipation is when your motions are small and hard and/or you need to strain to pass them. (This can lead to hemorrhoids.) The most severe aspect is when you can’t go at all. I remember reading a research paper somewhere in the mid 70’s where some volunteer prisoners allowed their anuses to be plugged with cotton. Monitoring these individuals over the next 3 days showed the majority developed headaches, and blood tests showed a range of abnormal results.
Prevention is really not that difficult in the majority of cases.
- Increase your water intake.
- Increase your fiber intake. Fiber has been shown to increase the peristalsis of the gut. 30 gm of fiber daily is the recommended minimum for the average adult.
- Get physical! Movements that make your abdominal muscles work, such as walking, cycling and/or swimming are simple ways that work.

This a good post and thanks for for the advice. I just know now that it can cause hemorrhoids. Yes water and exercise are the best ways aside from eating high fiber foods.

Another tip - do not do the Atkins diet - this was the only time that I got constipated.
