Constipation

Constipation is when your motions are small and hard and/or you need to strain to pass them. (This can lead to hemorrhoids.) The most severe aspect is when you can’t go at all. I remember reading a research paper somewhere in the mid 70’s where some volunteer prisoners allowed their anuses to be plugged with cotton. Monitoring these individuals over the next 3 days showed the majority developed headaches, and blood tests showed a range of abnormal results.

Prevention is really not that difficult in the majority of cases.

  1. Increase your water intake.
  2. Increase your fiber intake. Fiber has been shown to increase the peristalsis of the gut. 30 gm of fiber daily is the recommended minimum for the average adult.
  3. Get physical! Movements that make your abdominal muscles work, such as walking, cycling and/or swimming are simple ways that work.

This a good post and thanks for for the advice. I just know now that it can cause hemorrhoids. Yes water and exercise are the best ways aside from eating high fiber foods.

Another tip - do not do the Atkins diet - this was the only time that I got constipated.
