Another scan, anyone?

This is fascinating – whether or not abnormalities picked up on scans are, in fact, the problem causing the pain. We all love new hi-tech diagnostic equipment. How valuable is it?

There is no denying that the majority of diagnostic procedures are necessary and give valuable feedback. But are we so focused on so-called empirical evidence that we overlook the obvious?

The pain may be real, but the scan is deceiving.

Just something to think about.

I’ve never thought about it that way–scary! I guess when something is not feeling right, one should try multiple approaches to get to the bottom of it :)

I always stress on clinical examination. Investigations are only to support my clinical diagnosis.

Wow, that’s interesting. That is something I’ve said for years though. Just because you can see something doesn’t mean it’s a problem, it just means you can see it now. Very, very interesting.

I’ve always been a big advocate of simpler is always better (Occums Law). The majority of tests I think are only useful in confirming ones opinions about the diagnosis and can help prescribe the proper treatment. But to much testing and/or the lack of experience on the users part can lead to mis-diagnosis and confusion. Not to mention a waste of time and money.

Hello Guru, what entice you to post an article. This article was extremely interesting, especially since I was searching for thoughts on this subject last Thursday.
