Cycling – healthy or not?

Recently several articles about cycling have come to my attention. It can be detrimental to your health! I love cycling, so I found this most disturbing, as you can imagine.

Well, the traditional seats on a bicycle are bad for the nerves of the groin. And cyclists tend to have bones which are less dense than they should be! Now what?

Seats: get yourself a proper seat which will minimise groin pressure. Check your bike shop for the split or cut-out styles, which are more anatomically correct. Or the gel type which supports without excess pressure.

Now, what to do about bone density? Well, don’t be a long-distance racer. Normal recreational cyclists don’t seem tcyclingo suffer from this problem. Give yourself good nutritional support which is properly balanced. A good quality calcium supplement such as raw (unpasteurised) milk, together with Vitamin D and weight bearing exercise, can greatly improve bone density.

Ensure you warm up properly before your ride, have your seat at the correct height to prevent knee problems, and ride for the pleasure of it.

Haven’t been on a bicycle in years and from looking at those little bitty seats I doubt I ever will be again because I know they don’t make a big enough one for my big old butt.

Interesting post. I’ve heard bad things about jogging too. Asides the amount of businessmen that have heart attacks, it is supposed to cause cartilage damage in the knees. Though swimming is a great alternative.
