Yes, Chiropractors are Real Doctors

A lot of people seem to think that chiropractors, masseurs, physiotherapists and “manipulative therapists” all come out of the same box. Let me correct this.

My Degree is “Doctor of Chiropractic”, obtained from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. My subjects included physiotherapy, massage, and many, many hours of study and practice in adjusting vertebral subluxations. My class hours were in excess of 4000, over a 4 year period.

I was trained to diagnose and treat a range of musculo-skeletal conditions, to know when and where to adjust, and more importantly when not to adjust.

So before you let any one “crack your back”, check their credentials. Just because the guy works with the local football club does not mean he is an expert!

This is great. Glad you made this clear. I actually heard someone say the other day “I need to go see a real doctor before I see my chiropractor.” So you are right, too many people fail to see the value of someone with your education and credentials. Speaking of which, I so need to get my back in shape, wish you were closer. Thanks for visiting my blog by the way :-)

Great info. I’ve always wondered the difference between a chiropractor and an osteopath–are they related?

Hi Coop. To answer your question - not specifically! A chiropractor will help your body function as best as it can. Which could mean that you would be better able to get off your couch and walk or generally be more active. It is not my understanding that it can change a person’s metabolism. Correct me if I’m wrong!

Hi Nicole. They are similar. Both relieve pressure on nerves, helping the body heal itself and work as it was designed to do. Chiropractors do very specific adjustments to spinal segments, whereas Osteopaths to broader mobilisation procedures. At least, that is my understanding.
