Care for your animals too

December 30th, 2008 by dmorton | 5 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic

Many people have discovered the benefits of Chiropractic care for their animals.

When I was still in practice, I regularly adjusted working greyhounds as well as domestic pets, horses etc. Obviously not in my people clinic! But my human patients found their level of health improved with regular chiropractic care and wanted their animals to experience similar benefits.

They found their animals were generally healthier, more mobile and flexible, they appeared to be less stressed and more obedient!

There are special courses available for Chiropractors and Veterinarians in animal adjusting. Ensure you take your animal to someone who is properly trained, just as you would ensure your health care practitioner was an accredited professional.

Chiropractic influences DNA

December 19th, 2008 by dmorton | 8 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic

Well! After my earlier article, this comes into my consciousness. Chiropractic Care Keeps you “Younger”.

It has now been demonstrated that regular chiropractic care influences DNA repair. WOW!

This study shows why people receiving regular long-term chiropractic care experience such positive health benefits. We have always known that chiropractic patients tend to be healthier overall than those people not receiving regular adjustments, but to have this shown to affect the body at DNA level just blows me away.

I’m kind of an old-school guy; I got my degree a long time ago. I know the benefits of adjustments in relieving nerve pressure, in relieving neck and back pain, in relieving infertility, in relieving asthma and colic and so forth and so on. It is a beautiful, simple and logical form of health care. And now to have proof that it alters the way the body repairs itself gives me another level of validation.

Invest in your health

December 15th, 2008 by dmorton | 4 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic, General Health

The best way to maximise your health is to be pro-active. Do the right things. Eat sensibly, exercise regularly, get adjusted regularly, wear sensible shoes. You know what to do. And you know what NOT to do.

We all have bad habits, but those habits do not have to rule our lives. I’ve said it before - everything in moderation. And that includes our spending habits. Is it sensible to pay money for sickness care? Or wiser to pay for wellness care? The kind of care that will help keep us well, instead of treating the symptoms of dys-function? Many studies have shown that chiropractic care is extremely cost effective, not only for the treatment of back pain and headaches, but in minimising the need for intervention (medical, surgical, pharmaceutical) thus saving lots and lots of money.

Not only saving money, which is always a good thing. But increasing our quality of life, which increases our quality of relationships and may be, just may be, improving our little corner of the world.

Why do I need more than one visit?

December 9th, 2008 by dmorton | 7 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic

“You didn’t get out of shape and unhealthy overnight, and you won’t get fit and healthy overnight.”
and “It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.”

I read these recently, and immediately thought of all the people who say “Why do I have to keep going to the Chiropractor?”

Our health problems start when we are very young. Often when still in the uterus but more often during the birth process. We are dragged screaming and kicking into the world. Then we are picked up incorrectly, letting our head flop around on our tiny neck. Then we fall and tumble for years. And sports injuries, and poor posture, and carrying school bags incorrectly, and all the other insults we heap upon ourselves.
Then we start work. Then we start drinking and fall and tumble even more! And fights, and car accidents, and falls, etc.

Then one day it’s all too much - we sneeze! And our back “goes out”. Well, guess what? It’s the accumulation of all those things where our body has adapted and coped and finally it just can’t cope any more. And we expect it to be “cured” immediately if not sooner.

We need to deal with all the layers of injury. One by one. Adjustment by adjustment. And as we gradually remove all those levels of interference, not only does the immediate symptom go away but we start to feel better than we have for years. Because our body is finally working the way it was designed to do.

Chiropractic alters brain function

December 3rd, 2008 by dmorton | 3 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic

A recent study has for the first time shown that a chiropractic adjustment sends signals to the brain which alters muscle control. Measurements were taken of how brain waves were altered. This amazing research  has proven that there are definite changes to the way the brain processes information before and after an adjustment. We all know that if there is any interference to nerve function, there will be decreased function. This has now been demonstrated more clearly than before.

Coincidentally (??), there have been several reports recently that chiropractic care may benefit children with autism. If an adjustment can alter brain function, then it may help re-balance the nervous system. And if chiropractic care can help those with major dysfunction of the nervous system, imagine what it can do for the rest of us.

Chiropractic changes the way the brain processes information;

Complementary Medicine Becoming More Popular

November 27th, 2008 by dmorton | 1 Comment | Filed in Chiropractic, General Health

More and more people are realising that “normal” western (allopathic) medicine is not the total answer to their health problems, and are looking for alternatives. Also, people are becoming more informed about the fact that there are other choices.

Holistic medicine treats the whole person. Lifestyle, diet, history are all relevant - not just the presenting symptom. People who take responsibility for their health are being attracted to this type of health care. Instead of taking a pill to make the symptom go away, more people are realising that with some lifestyle changes their health can be significantly improved.

And people are choosing Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Homoeopathy and other healing modalities which strengthen the body’s own defences, allowing for a healthy immune system and less likelihood of sickness.

Yes, Chiropractors are Real Doctors

November 23rd, 2008 by dmorton | 6 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic

A lot of people seem to think that chiropractors, masseurs, physiotherapists and “manipulative therapists” all come out of the same box. Let me correct this.

My Degree is “Doctor of Chiropractic”, obtained from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. My subjects included physiotherapy, massage, and many, many hours of study and practice in adjusting vertebral subluxations. My class hours were in excess of 4000, over a 4 year period.

I was trained to diagnose and treat a range of musculo-skeletal conditions, to know when and where to adjust, and more importantly when not to adjust.

So before you let any one “crack your back”, check their credentials. Just because the guy works with the local football club does not mean he is an expert!

Chiropractic - what can it do for me?

November 22nd, 2008 by dmorton | No Comments | Filed in Chiropractic, General Health

What can chiropractic do?

This is a terrific article from Dr Paul Martin

Dr Paul Martin says: I’ve had a couple of conversations with people lately about chiropractic. Usually when people talk me about chiropractic, they approach it from the standpoint of, “what can you do for me?” This is a completely valid stance.

So, what does a Chiropractor do?

November 16th, 2008 by dmorton | 1 Comment | Filed in Chiropractic

Found this informative article recently - from Health First Chiropractic - entitled “What Exactly Does a Chiropractor Do?“, and thought I would share it with you:

“There are many ideas out there (good and bad) about what exactly doctors of chiropractic do. Chiropractic is a very effective therapy for pain control; however, the profession has much more to offer than relief of aches and pain.

Chiropractic is a very unique approach to whole-body health care and wellness. The basic idea of chiropractic philosophy may be simplified through explaining five simple truths of the profession. They are as follows:

The body is a self-healing organism. As long as there is no interference with the body, it should always be 100% healthy. Nature is unable to program for less than perfect health.

The nervous system controls every part of the body. There is nothing we do or experience that is not controlled by the nervous system.

Interference with the proper functioning of the nervous system can occur – especially where the nerves exit the spinal cord and pass between the vertebrae. This disturbed function is referred to as a vertebral subluxation and arises when the vertebrae are not moving properly causing pressure or irritation on the associated nerves.

When subluxations are left uncorrected, they can have wide-ranging negative effects on health and result in dis-ease.

A chiropractor’s job is to locate and remove vertebral subluxations through a chiropractic adjustment. This restores the natural order of the nervous system and allows the body to effectively heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.

These five statements support the fact that chiropractors do not treat specific illnesses; rather their goal is to ensure the body is operating at its maximum potential and heals itself as designed.

For further information on the detrimental effects of subluxation or the many benefits of chiropractic adjustments, talk to your chiropractor.”

Headaches

November 9th, 2008 by dmorton | 2 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic

These two recent articles discuss the role of chiropractic care in the treatment of headaches:

MY HEAD HURTS and MY HEAD STILL HURTS

You really need a sense of humour when you suffer from migraines! That is why I became a Doctor of Chiropractic. I suffered severe migraines (is there any other kind?) in my teens. My father, God bless his soul, insisted that I try Chiropractic care. Within a few short months the severity and duration of the migraines had decreased significantly.

In fact, if you have a splitting headache, Chiropractic has significantly fewer side effects than taking medication and, in the majority of cases, will provide rapid relief.
