Invest in your health

December 15th, 2008 by dmorton | 4 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic, General Health

The best way to maximise your health is to be pro-active. Do the right things. Eat sensibly, exercise regularly, get adjusted regularly, wear sensible shoes. You know what to do. And you know what NOT to do.

We all have bad habits, but those habits do not have to rule our lives. I’ve said it before - everything in moderation. And that includes our spending habits. Is it sensible to pay money for sickness care? Or wiser to pay for wellness care? The kind of care that will help keep us well, instead of treating the symptoms of dys-function? Many studies have shown that chiropractic care is extremely cost effective, not only for the treatment of back pain and headaches, but in minimising the need for intervention (medical, surgical, pharmaceutical) thus saving lots and lots of money.

Not only saving money, which is always a good thing. But increasing our quality of life, which increases our quality of relationships and may be, just may be, improving our little corner of the world.

Why do I need more than one visit?

December 9th, 2008 by dmorton | 7 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic

“You didn’t get out of shape and unhealthy overnight, and you won’t get fit and healthy overnight.”
and “It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.”

I read these recently, and immediately thought of all the people who say “Why do I have to keep going to the Chiropractor?”

Our health problems start when we are very young. Often when still in the uterus but more often during the birth process. We are dragged screaming and kicking into the world. Then we are picked up incorrectly, letting our head flop around on our tiny neck. Then we fall and tumble for years. And sports injuries, and poor posture, and carrying school bags incorrectly, and all the other insults we heap upon ourselves.
Then we start work. Then we start drinking and fall and tumble even more! And fights, and car accidents, and falls, etc.

Then one day it’s all too much - we sneeze! And our back “goes out”. Well, guess what? It’s the accumulation of all those things where our body has adapted and coped and finally it just can’t cope any more. And we expect it to be “cured” immediately if not sooner.

We need to deal with all the layers of injury. One by one. Adjustment by adjustment. And as we gradually remove all those levels of interference, not only does the immediate symptom go away but we start to feel better than we have for years. Because our body is finally working the way it was designed to do.

Complementary Medicine Becoming More Popular

November 27th, 2008 by dmorton | 1 Comment | Filed in Chiropractic, General Health

More and more people are realising that “normal” western (allopathic) medicine is not the total answer to their health problems, and are looking for alternatives. Also, people are becoming more informed about the fact that there are other choices.

Holistic medicine treats the whole person. Lifestyle, diet, history are all relevant - not just the presenting symptom. People who take responsibility for their health are being attracted to this type of health care. Instead of taking a pill to make the symptom go away, more people are realising that with some lifestyle changes their health can be significantly improved.

And people are choosing Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Homoeopathy and other healing modalities which strengthen the body’s own defences, allowing for a healthy immune system and less likelihood of sickness.

Do good, Feel good

November 26th, 2008 by dmorton | 1 Comment | Filed in General Health

So it seems that those people with a belief in doing unto others are healthier.

A growing body of research is showing that people who care about others tend to be healthier and happier. Makes sense, doesn’t it? If we focus outwards on others’ needs, obviously there are others in our life. It has been recognized for some time that we all need social interaction. And if we don’t have others to relate to and care about, than we focus internally which is usually negative.

More importantly, a belief in a higher power gives our life structure, meaning and purpose.

This article discusses it in more depth.

Fascinating!

Chiropractic - what can it do for me?

November 22nd, 2008 by dmorton | No Comments | Filed in Chiropractic, General Health

What can chiropractic do?

This is a terrific article from Dr Paul Martin

Dr Paul Martin says: I’ve had a couple of conversations with people lately about chiropractic. Usually when people talk me about chiropractic, they approach it from the standpoint of, “what can you do for me?” This is a completely valid stance.

Chiropractic - safe and simple

November 2nd, 2008 by dmorton | 2 Comments | Filed in Chiropractic, General Health

You would never realise that I actually look for articles and news releases about chiropractic, would you?

Chiropractic is so simple - remove the interference and allow the body to function as it was designed to do.

Chiropractic does a body good

This is a good one - most people start chiropractic because of a specific injury or symptom, usually after they have tried the usual mainstream approaches (it’s funny - chiropractic is too alternative for allopathic medicine, but too mainstream for the alternatives). Then a friend or family member will suggest that they look into chiropractic care. Then they realise that their Doctor of Chiropractic is a highly trained professional (don’t try this at home!) and not the bogey man portrayed by some other health professionals.

A recent study confirmed that interventions by a chiropractor can sometimes be the best option. The Neck Pain Task Force also questioned a link once thought to exist between neck manipulation and the development of a stroke. “The study concludes that patients develop stroke symptoms at the same rate, regardless of the type of practitioner they select.”

A Doctor of Chiropractic has been to college/university for almost the same number of hours as a medical doctor. Those hours are spent learning why, how, where and WHERE NOT to adjust. A Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to recognise abnormalities, congenital disorders, and many other indications of where extra caution is needed. In those instances, the technique/s used will be those specially appropriate to the condition and to the patient’s needs.

Children and Chiropractic

October 28th, 2008 by dmorton | 1 Comment | Filed in Chiropractic

These articles caught my eye recently:

Why children need chiropractic and a healthy nervous system

Children can benefit from Chiropractic!

and

AMA warns against child chiro care

As a chiropractor, I have seen the most amazing changes in the health and wellbeing of children of all ages. From newborns and up, dealing with sleeping problems, colic, asthma, lack of co-ordination, etc. My own children were adjusted immediately after birth. They have had a healthy childhood and are now healthy adults.

It is a basic premise of chiropractic that a healthy nervous system means a healthy body. Stronger immune system, less colds and other illnesses, better co-ordination. Minimising the effects of asthma. In fact, chiropractic is an investment in your child’s long-term health and well-being.

More access to chiropractic care

October 17th, 2008 by dmorton | No Comments | Filed in Chiropractic, General Health

This is fascinating, in that the government recognises the benefits of chiropractic care to the point where it is now available to our military personnel.

Congress orders further expansion of military chiropractic program

October 10, 2008 — After an intensive joint lobbying campaign by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and the Association of Chiropractic Colleges
